FLIGHTS BOOST AGRA’S TOURISM INDUSTRY
With more and more chartered planes ferrying foreign tourists preferring to land at Agra airport instead of Delhi, the city’s tourism sector has received a major boost, officials say.
An average of two flights have been landing in Agra since the beginning of November, increasing tourist inflows by as much as 60 percent, tourism department officials say.
These tourists prefer to visit Agra alone, evident by the fact that they return to their respective countries for further sightseeing or holidaying, instead of visiting other places in the country, they added.
The new development has also brought some relief to locals involved in tourism related trade, who had been complaining of “the Delhi tourist lobby” allegedly discouraging foreign tourists from staying overnight in Agra. Now more and more tourists are spending several days together in and around Agra, they say.
